Driven by Mozambique’s Area 1 and Area 4 projects, Africa is poised to become the dominant LNG investment destination by the end of this year, with the continent seeing nearly one-third of total greenfield investment.

The $20-billion FID is the largest ever for a sub-Saharan oil and gas project. The project’s location on the African east coast puts it in optimal position to sell LNG to the lucrative Asian market.

Anadarko Petroleum selects JV companies to provide EPC for the onshore LNG development. Saipem scores the biggest contract in its history. Work will begin upon FID, expected this month.

A final investment decision is expected later this year on the project, which will involve the construction of two trains with a combined annual capacity of more than 15 mtpa of LNG.

Anadarko Mozambique Area 1, LTDA, a subsidiary of Anadarko Petroleum Corp., named the preferred tenderers for provision of the subsea production systems. Formal award will follow final agreement of contracts and Mozambique LNG taking a final investment decision, expected in the first half of this year.

Anadarko Petroleum wants a fleet of at least six vehicles with armor heavy enough to stop AK-47 bullets at its natural-gas project in Mozambique. And it needs them soon.

The SPAs signed with Shell and Tokyo Gas take Anadarko’s long-term sales from the project to more than 7.5 mtpa, with additional deals expected in the near future.

The deal calls for CNOOC to get 1.5 mtpa of gas from the Anadarko-operated Mozambique LNG project over the next 13 years. The project is the first onshore LNG development for the coastal East African nation.

The ceremonial event took place at Geoje Island, South Korea. Startup of LNG production in offshore Mozambique’s Area 4 is expected in 2022.

Mozambique Rovuma Venture submitted the development plan for the first phase of the project, which will produce, liquefy, and market natural gas from the Mamba fields located in the Area 4 block offshore Mozambique. An FID is scheduled next year, with production expected to begin in 2024.
