SPE is presenting a workshop to further understanding of HSE in drilling operations and sharpen knowledge of industry best practices.

“Enhancing HSE Performance for Drilling Operations” is set for 14–15 August in The Woodlands, Texas, USA. The workshop will include presentations from experts with extended opportunities for question and answers and breakout sessions that will prompt focused discussion on timely topics such as contractor safety programs, the role of process safety, how human factors drive safety, and managing hazards related to drilling operations.

Workshop topics will focus on how to conduct site assessments, obtain permits, design and maintain equipment, and improve workforce safety. Best practices for engaging with communities and managing ever-evolving regulatory framework will also be presented.

The workshop will include eight sessions. The sessions are

  • Efficient Tools and Applications for HSE Data Management
  • Assessing Contractor Safety Programs
  • Community and Social Impacts of Drilling
  • HSE Considerations in Drilling Equipment Design and Selection
  • Contingency Planning
  • Human, Cultural, and Process Factors for Safer Drilling
  • Rig Up/Rig Down Safety Planning
  • Managing Hazards

In addition, a training course will be offered along with the workshop. “Process Safety for E&P Operations” is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of process safety techniques and how applying these techniques can improve safety, equipment reliability, and environmental performance while reducing overall costs. It presents an overview of the elements comprising process safety along with practical examples of how process safety can be integrated into day-to-day operations.
The course will be led by Mark Hansen, director of process safety at Contek Solutions. Hansen has more than 30 years of experience in HSE and risk and quality management. He has worked for a variety of industrial sectors including oil and gas, chemical, service, utilities, and insurance.

Hansen holds a BS degree in psychology with minors in biology, chemistry, physics, and English and an MS degree in industrial engineering from Texas A&M University. He has authored more than 200 publications and has written three career development books.

SPE workshops maximize the exchange of ideas among attendees and presenters through brief technical presentations followed by extended question and answer periods. These highly focused topics attract an informed audience eager to discuss issues critical to advancing both technology and best practices. The technical program is comprised of presentations solicited by the program committee as opposed to a general call for papers or presentations. To stimulate frank discussion, no proceedings are published and members of the press are not invited to attend. Presentations that have been authorized for release are compiled by the SPE staff and released to attendees after the workshop.
