KBR has received an LNG front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract from Nigeria LNG (NLNG) for further expansion of the Bonny Island LNG plant at Bonny Island, Nigeria.
Under the terms of the contract KBR, as leaders of the Bonny7JV (joint venture) with TechnipFMC and JGC, will provide a basic design package and an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) bid for the expansion. The Train 7 project covers the addition of a complete LNG train and an additional common liquefaction unit (CLU) at the facility. The CLU draws feedstock from the 6 existing LNG trains delivered by KBR and its partners from 1995 to 2007.
The expansion project will include a liquefaction unit, an 84,200-m3 storage tank, a 36,000-m3 condensate tank, and 3 gas turbine generators.
“This award is indicative of KBR’s strategic commitment to support NLNG, building on past success to deliver a high level of Nigerian content,” Jay Ibrahim, KBR’s president for Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific, said in a statement.
Bonny Island has been expanded several times since it began commercial operation in 1999. The NLNGPlus expansion project came on-stream in November 2005 (Train 4) and February 2006 (Train 5). Train 6 became operational in 2007 and featured additional upgrades. The first three trains were brought into operation in 1999 (Train 2), 2000 (Train 1), and 2002 (Train 3).
According to NLNG, Train 7 should increase Bonny Island’s total production capacity to 30 Mtpa of LNG. The facility currently has a nameplate processing capacity of 22 Mtpa and four LNG storage tanks, each with a capacity of 84,200 m3. It also has two LNG export jetties and 23 dedicated LNG ships. The expansion will include debottlenecking of Trains 1–6 to help increase the facility’s overall processing capacity.
The final investment decision (FID) on the expansion project is expected by the end of this year, while commissioning is expected sometime between 2023 and 2024.
Nigeria LNG is a JV between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Shell Gas, Total, and Eni.
