Mammoet Awarded Unloading, Transport, Installation Contract for Arctic LNG 2

The contract is Mammoet’s biggest in terms of aggregate tonnage. The Arctic LNG 2 project reached FID in September 2019.


Load engineering firm Mammoet is the latest company to be awarded a contract for the Arctic LNG 2 project being developed in the Gydan Peninsula in the norther part of Siberia, Russia. TechnipFMC-led joint venture NovArctic in cooperation with Saipem and NIPIgas brought on Mammoet as an unloading, transportation, and installation contractor for the project.

Over the course of 4 years, Mammoet will install 42 large modules onto three concrete gravity-based structures in Murmansk. The project is expected to use around 2,000 self-propelled modular transporter axles, several mega-jack lifting systems, a crane fleet spearheaded by a CC8800-1 crane with a boom booster, and around 120 workers at peak times.

Each module will weigh between 8,000 to 17,000 tons; over the project’s lifespan the total weight of lifting operations will reach some 500,000 tons. Mammoet will provide unloading, lifting, jacking, and skidding services at the purpose-built shipyard near Murmansk, ensuring a continuous installation of the modules on top of the GBS.

Mammoet also landed a contract for unloading services at the module fabrication yard, Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan Offshore Engineering in China (a joint venture between McDermott and CSIC Wuchuan). McDermott won a contract in September 2019 to provide three modules for the Arctic LNG 2 project. The scope includes the fabrication of three pre-assembled unit complex process modules.

Other companies working on Arctic LNG 2 include TechnipFMC, which was awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction contract by Novatek and its partners in July 2019.

Final investment decision for the $21.3 billion Arctic LNG 2 project was approved by Novatek in September 2019. The LNG plant will consist of three liquefaction trains; the launch of Train 1 is scheduled for 2023.
