QatarEnergy LNG has awarded McDermott an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract for the North Field South (NFS) offshore pipelines and cables project, McDermott announced on 3 October. The contract award terms were not disclosed.

The contract’s scope covers EPCI of almost 250 km of offshore and onshore gas pipelines connecting five new offshore wellhead platforms with two new onshore LNG trains in addition to subsea composite power and control cables, according to a company press release.

McDermott will manage the project from its Doha office using the company’s in-house marine assets for installation. The Qatar fabrication yard (QFAB)—a joint venture between McDermott and Qatar’s maritime company Nakilat located at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard—will provide fabrication support.

“McDermott is now responsible for all of the offshore infrastructure associated with Qatar's massive North Field Expansion, with the execution done predominantly in Qatar,” Neil Gunnion, McDermott's Qatar country manager and vice president operations, said. “Between our main execution center in Doha and our QFAB fabrication facility in Ras Laffan, we are able to deliver complex offshore projects for Qatar, in Qatar.”

Qatar’s North Field Expansion Aims To Double LNG Production

The NFS infrastructure is designed to supply feed gas for two additional LNG trains and is part of the North Field Expansion Project (NFXP), which will help double Qatar’s total LNG production to 142 mpta from the current 77 mpta.

Earlier, QatarEnergy had awarded McDermott contracts for the NFS pipelines front-end engineering and design, the NFS jackets EPCI, and the NFXP topsides and pipelines which included the NFS topsides.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with QatarEnergy LNG to contribute to the completion of this strategic offshore development,” Mike Sutherland, McDermott's senior vice president, Offshore Middle East, said, adding that McDermott’s activities in Qatar are "unique" in that they date back to the Emirate’s earliest projects in the 1990s.
