The Texas Railroad Commission is revisiting the state’s primary oil and gas waste regulations, which were last updated in 1984, to better align them with modern industry practices and rising demands for stronger environmental protections.

In this case study, through a waste-minimization concept, a reduce/reuse/recycle approach is used to manage produced drilling waste.

Waste injection in shale has been performed on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) for more than 15 years. Techniques have been developed that allow wells to dispose of several million barrels into individual shale domains with matrix permeability in the nanodarcy range and no permeable layers.
