Employment is not a direct function of oil prices, but of upstream and midstream investment and activity. Fluctuations in SPE membership generally lag the activity increase or decrease by 1–2 years. It is expected that the current upcycle of activity will contribute to a rebound in membership, especially among the young professionals.

The Offshore Technology Conference announced the inaugural OTC Emerging Leaders program, which will recognize young professionals from each of the OTC sponsoring, endorsing, and supporting organizations.

Nominations are now open for the 2020 IOGP Outstanding Young Professional Award, sponsored by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers in association with the biennial SPE International Conference and Exhibition on Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability.
