Mature fields
Talos Energy founder Tim Duncan has been named executive chairman of newly formed 1947 Oil & Gas, which will focus on acquiring and developing mature, shallow-water assets through its buyout of Renaissance Offshore. The deal is expected to close in Q2 2026.
The country’s foreign investment bid comes as Sonatrach launches its largest capital expenditure outlay—$60 billion to be spent from 2026 to 2030.
ExxonMobil will retain its equity stakes in ongoing Bass Strait projects even as it hands off its operatorship responsibilities to Woodside Energy.

Nine horizontal wells, including one injector well, were drilled in a marginal oil field in Bohai Bay, China. Seismic inversion indicates that sand properties and connectivity vary dramatically across the field.
-
Polymer flooding has been used to enhance the production of oil from mature fields in Oman. This article discusses the trial of several approaches to improve the treatment of water produced from these fields.
-
DuPont is ramping up the commercial-scale implementation of its microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) method after nearly a decade of development and testing of what it says is a low-risk way to improve production from mature fields.
-
After a year of field testing, a new type of biopolymer developed by Wintershall, Germany’s largest oil and gas producer, is showing promise as an effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) tool in one of the country’s longest producing oil fields.
-
Linhua4-1 was China’s first tieback subsea development project. To develop this marginal oil field, a number of technical challenges were overcome through a series of new technologies, and their successful development and implementation.
-
Onshore gas developments are often characterized by drilling, fracturing, and production of wells before low-pressure gas-gathering systems are in place. As well production declines, liquid-loading issues begin to appear. Use of a twin-screw pump to boost deliquefication was investigated.
-
This paper focuses on the applicability of subsea processing technology employing multiphase pumps to develop marginal fields commercially. Analytical methods were used to evaluate the pumps, and the results were validated through case studies in specific fields.
-
Sustainable growth in oil and gas production must stem from a combination of new discoveries and optimized recovery from maturing fields. Therefore, development of mature oil fields has been, and will increasingly be, an attractive subject.
-
The new channel-fracturing technique is capable of increasing fracture conductivity by up to two orders of magnitude.

As a field matures, there is a crucial need to focus on integrity-related issues such as hazard prevention and mitigation.
