Norwegian Police Put Drone Detectors on Offshore Oil and Gas Platforms

Oil companies in recent weeks have reported a jump in sightings of unidentified drones, and Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority recently warned of the risk of accidents or attacks.

Norwegian police have placed drone detection systems on offshore oil and gas platforms to investigate recent safety breaches, the newspaper VG reported on 4 October, part of a wider security ramp-up following damage recently to the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

Oil companies in recent weeks have reported a jump in sightings of unidentified drones, and Norway's Petroleum Safety Authority recently warned of the risk of accidents or attacks.

Benedicte Bjoernland, the head of Norway's police directorate, told VG the sensors were deployed to identify any illegal drones and to be a deterrent against anyone seeking to use them in the first place.

The police directorate declined to say how many of the more than 90 Norwegian oil and gas fields had been equipped with the detectors.
