Energy professionals from across Europe attended the SPE Europe Energy Conference and Exhibition (EuropEC) in Turin, Italy, from 26 to 28 June 2024. Under the theme of "Implementing the Energy Transition Through Innovation and Sustainable Technology," the event provided a common platform across various disciplines, spotlighting the notable scientific and technical advancements in the energy transition.
The conference program consisted of nine panel sessions and 21 technical sessions. A student and young professional program ran concurrently with the conference and focused on the evolving targets of education for the energy sector.
With its diverse technical content, the event enabled SPE to address the unique challenges facing the industry today. The opening debate session, “The Energy Transition Needs Engineers,” featured a panel moderated by Iman Hill of ReconAfrica and United Oil and Gas. The panelists, including Filippo Abba, chief technology and innovation officer and COO sustainable infrastructures, Saipem; Reinhard Oswald, senior vice president operations, OMV; and Marilyn Smith, executive director, The Energy Action Project, provided diverse perspectives on how this transition impacts companies’ business models and their workforce, including changing skill profiles and career opportunities.
“Great technical presentations and passionate discussions at EuropEC about the hottest energy transition topics,” said Francesca Verga, professor at Politecnico di Torino and conference chair. “The values of SPE—solutions, people, and energy—were at the core of this stimulating event participated in with more than 500 delegates representing various countries, companies, and disciplines, but all sharing the same intent of contributing to shaping a sustainable energy future.”
Other conference topics included sustainability, CCUS, geothermal, hydrogen, carbon-efficient reservoir management, plant conversions, net-zero energy economics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and digitalization.
In response to the rapidly evolving energy landscape, SPE is renewing its commitment to the industry by introducing a new tagline for the event that encompasses the industry and builds on SPE’s continued focus. The 2025 SPE Europe Energy Conference and Exhibition will debut SPE’s new tagline, “Solutions. People. Energy.”
“Our new tagline embodies the vision and future direction of this pivotal European event,” said Terry Palisch, 2024 SPE President. “It highlights our commitment to promoting innovative solutions, empowering individuals, and addressing the increasing demand for affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy.”
