TechnipFMC’s (in collaboration with Halliburton) Riserless Coiled Tubing Technology won the 2025 SPE/ICoTA Intervention Technology Award at the annual SPE/ICoTA Well Intervention Conference and Exhibition held 25–26 March in The Woodlands, Texas.
The company was also the recipient of the 2025 Curtis Blount Outstanding Paper award for SPE 224032 Riserless Coiled Tubing Services From Light Well Intervention Vessel—First Operation in a Live Subsea Well, authored by P. Buset, B. Gramstad, M. Howitt, S. Maeland, A. Sbordone, T. Stinson, C. Tramer, and T. Øia, TechnipFMC; and D.A. Barclay, Halliburton.
According to the paper’s authors, riserless light well intervention (RLWI) traditionally supported only wireline and slickline services, requiring riser-based systems for coiled tubing (CT), which increased complexity, costs, and environmental impact. The introduction of riserless coiled tubing (RLCT) overcomes this limitation, enabling more efficient production optimization, well integrity management, and plug and abandonment (P&A) operations.

Integrated into the RLWI suite, RLCT allows seamless transitions between wireline/slickline and coiled tubing in just hours, optimizing operational efficiency. It improves safety by eliminating the need for a tension frame, reducing personnel exposure to hazards, and minimizing forces on the subsea tree and wellhead. RLCT’s ability to operate without mooring or BOP tethering enhances efficiency, especially in shallow waters.
For P&A, RLCT supports effective fluid circulation, precise cement placement, and perf/wash/cement operations, ensuring high-quality cementing. With its proven-in-field operations, RLCT adds significant value to RLWI, enhancing both production and abandonment capabilities.
The annual award recognizes outstanding technical innovation or application of technology for well intervention, furthering ICoTA's mission of improving communication and promoting the value of well intervention solutions within the oil and gas industry.
First awarded in 2007, it recognizes both the contribution to innovation and the introduction of new technologies in well intervention.
